About Pontycymmer

Pontycymmer is a former mining village in the Garw Valley, Bridgend, South Wales. As with many places with Welsh names, the name of the village can often be a description of its situation or function. In this context, pont is Welsh for "bridge", while cymer means "confluence or meeting of watercourses". Indeed, at the beginning of the village and denoting its boundary with Pantygog, the River Garw is joined by the Nant Forch Wen. At the other side of the village, towards its boundary with Blaengarw, the River Garw is also joined by the Nant Gelli Wern (marsh grove stream) at Ffaldau, the village square. Read More.
